Solanaceae is the creation of Kim Larsen, which portrays a more psychedelic folk feeling than usually put forth in his :Of The Wand & The Moon: project. However the unmistakable voice and songwriting is still Kim Larsen�s, which probably leaves this album as close to an :Of The Wand & The Moon: album without being that. The album features 13 songs with themes of magick, woods and mysteries, and are mainly written and performed by Kim Larsen with kind help and appearances by Chelsea Robb (Arrowwood), Pythagumus Marshall (Novemthree), Michael Laird (Unto Ashes), John van der Lieth (Sonne Hagal), Fenella Overgaard (:Of The Wand & The Moon:), Vincent Farrow (Solblot) and Anne Eltard who also appeared on the first :Of The Wand & The Moon: album. It�s no secret I consider Kim Larsen one of the most important and eccentric musicians of modern time. Thus, it should be no secret I really long for the follow up to the smash hit �Sonnenheim� released in 2005. It�s still not announced though. Kim has been busy ever since, writing and composing songs for his new project SOLANACEAE and the first album was recently published on his label Heidrunar Myrkrunar in regular cooperation with Tesco. It�s still dark folk, but in a different manner. His evolution could maybe be compared to the one of WERKRAUM that went from industrial tingled neofolk to a more complex, psychedelic folk sound resembling the 60�s and 70�s in many ways. My expectations on this release were enormous but after listening to some samples I understood I had no reason to be worried, Kim would complete this task with brilliance, and now, with the full result in my hand, all I can do is to check another prophecy answered. Also, not unlike WERKRAUM, this album was recorded in close affinity of dear friends. We get to meet some that Kim has been working with earlier, containing Fenella and Anne from OF THE WAND AND THE MOON, John from SONNE HAGAL, Vincent hailing from SOLBLOT and mr. Laird from UNTO ASHES. Also present during the recording were some friends from the Little Somebody Records; NOVEMTHREE and ARROWWOOD. Those who�ve heard Little Somebody stuff will pretty much know what to expect from this album... A strong, mystical mood, warm and dusky plucked acoustic guitars and a wide range of other organic instruments. A splash of STONE BREATH and, as I mentioned earlier, an ounce 70�s psych-folk. It all seems to be very influenced by old time traditions, fables, tales, nature in general and the strong connection between the musicians. Love is really pouring out of the speakers as I write and it�s easy to be dragged along with the feeling. The red thread through the tracks is, I think I�ve mentioned it already, the acoustic guitar. Whether a track is instrumental or not, the guitar is alway in focus. The melodies are interesting; both minimal yet very polished and evocative at the same time, and the songs are usually built up by an intro part, a verse part, a chorus part and a climax part where guitars, violins, cellos, flutes and accordions are in perfect balance, creating some of the most fulfilled and enchanting folk music in a very long time. The lyrics, written mainly by Kim or Michael Laird (apart from one by SONNE HAGAL-John and one adapted), are of an absolute world class and not unlike the tunes, also the these will get splashed with superlatives such as beautiful, magical and dreamy. Nature hasn�t felt this alive in ages and faiths are portraited with a huge dose of drama. Vocals are provided by, you�ve guessed it, Larsen, Laird, Van Der Lieth and the ladies, in a fine blend. All this is bound together by a perfect production and really amusing art-work, as you can see above. This will absolutely remain one of the best albums of the year, of that I�m sure. Det er dejligt! -------------- review:http://theshadowscommence.com/sol.html Wie bereits weithin bekannt sein d�rfte, verbirgt sich hinter dem Projekt SOLANACEAE niemand anderes als KIM LARSEN, der hier neben OF THE WAND & THE MOON ein weiteres Bet�tigungsfeld er�ffnet. Der Grund f�r die Trennung dieser beiden Projekte l�sst sich vielleicht mit etwas Phantasie aus dem Namen des neuen Projektes selbst extrahieren, handelt es sich bei SOLANACEAE doch um die Familie der Nachtschattengew�chse � was dem Ganzen eine organische, beschattete Nat�rlichkeit verleiht. Nimmt man jetzt noch hinzu, dass einige Pflanzen aus eben dieser Familie � nicht zuletzt Tabak, aber auch die Tollkirsche oder die Alraune, letztere neben ihrer mystischen Bedeutung � als Rauschmittel dienen k�nnen, so kann man sich beim H�ren der Musik eine Erkl�rung f�r dieses neue Projekt k�hn erschlie�en. Tats�chlich klingt das schlicht selbstbetitelte Album organischer, ruhiger und psychedelischer als OTWATM, wobei sich zudem ein gewisser amerikanischer Folkeinfluss erkennen l�sst � exemplarisch in �Through The Trees Spears The Sun�. Wenn man beim H�ren von OTWATM aufgrund der Verwendung von Keyboardkl�ngen, Samples und nicht zuletzt aufgrund der etwas � jedenfalls auf den letzten Alben - strengeren musikalischen Ausrichtung und Struktur vielleicht manchmal eher an Herbst- oder Wintermusik denkt, dann werden beim H�ren des neuen Materials Gedanken an eine warme, stille Sommernacht geweckt. Der Rhythmus wird verlangsamt, die Kl�nge flie�en ineinander und wirken verspielter, ufern aus, treiben in die Nacht hinaus. Schritte im Gras und zirpende Insekten. Statt der dr�ngend angeschlagenen Gitarre dominiert das zartere Saitenspiel. Das geht sicher zu Lasten einer vordergr�ndigen Eing�ngigkeit, die gerade �Sonnenheim� auszeichnete, zwingt aber dazu, sich mehr auf das Material einzulassen. Deshalb muss man auf wunderbar melodische St�cke keinesfalls verzichten, wobei KIM LARSEN gesangstechnisch gerade bei dem reduzierten, flott folkigen �The Blood Of My Lady� f�r seine Verh�ltnisse geradezu �ber sich hinausw�chst � wie er sich auf dieser Platte im Gesamteindruck ohnehin zaghaft etwas mehr in Richtung Gesang begibt. Aber auch das sanft schwebende doch stark an OTWATM erinnernde �I Saw Them Through The Pines� wie auch das von JOHN VAN DER LIETH von SONNE HAGAL gesungene �Midnight Garden� oder das hypnotische �The Swallows Spirals Through Them� �berzeugen. Wie es mittlerweile verbreitet zu sein scheint, versammelt auch dieses Album wieder eine gr��ere Zahl von G�sten, die unter anderem Gesang, Gitarre, Violine, Bodhran, Akkordeon, Fl�tenkl�nge und Perkussion beisteuern, wobei der Zusammenhalt der Platte dadurch gew�hrleistet wird, dass KIM LARSEN den Gesang nur bei drei St�cken abgibt und die G�ste zudem h�ufig an mehreren St�cken beteiligt sind, was die Kontinuit�t zus�tzlich erh�ht. Neben dem bereits erw�hnten JOHN VAN DER LIETH tragen vor allem MICHAEL LAIRD von UNTO ASHES aber auch PYTHAGUMUS MARSHALL (NOVEMTHREE) ihren Teil bei. Zu erw�hnen ist zudem vielleicht noch der Gesangsbeitrag von CHELSEA ROBB (ARROWWOOD) in �O Deep Woods�, der den Song f�rmlich n�chtlich, mystisch und vertr�umt dahingleiten l�sst und dabei etwas an das wunderbare ARROWWOOD-St�ck �In Ruin� erinnert. �berhaupt entsteht durch die Gastbeitr�ge eine interessante �berkreuzung von St�cken der Alben �Jordansfrost� von SONNE HAGAL, �The Blood Of My Lady�, dem neuen Album von UNTO ASHES, und eben dem vorliegenden Album von SOLANACEAE. Letztlich ist bei SOLANACEAE nicht alles anders als bei OTWATM aber der Gesamteindruck gerade im Vergleich zu �Sonnenheim� l�sst doch einige Unterschiede erkennen, wobei SOLANACEAE auf eine gewisse Art befreiter wirkt als das Hauptprojekt.
